PTO Budget & Gifting
Budget Approved at October 2009 meeting
The budget for the 2009-2010 school year was approved at the General Membership PTO meeting in October 2009. A PDF of the final document is below.
One of the PTO’s primary goals is to raise money to support Brownsville. The PTO has many fundraisers throughout the course of the year. These fundraisers are usually planned at the beginning of the school year. The proceeds from these fundraisers are used in two ways. First, the PTO develops an operating budget each year which details ongoing commitments. These include funds to support the Library, for example, as well as funding to individual teachers and departments. Second, in the Spring of every year, the PTO solicits input from parents, teachers and administrators for ideas of “Special Gifts” that the PTO will make at the end of the year after a vote of the general membership. These are one-time gifts.
For the 2008-2009 school year, we raised over $22,000 through our fundraisers. Our operating budget totaled approximately $12,500 and supports a variety of needs: school assemblies for students, funds for the school library, the literacy program, and money directly to meet classroom needs.
In addition to funding the Operating Budget, our fundraising efforts enabled the PTO to provide "Special Gifts." For the 2008-2009 school year, we gifted over $9,000 to the teachers at Brownsville. Teachers identified specific needs, and requests were voted on during the May 2009 meeting. We were happy to be able to support the following requests:
$1,000 to the Music program to purchase new instruments
$ 680 to the PE program to purchase new PE Mats
$ 1,624 to support the Kid Pan Alley songwriting program
$ 1,600 to support kids' tutoring
$ 780 to support the technology needs
$ 200 to support the School Nurse's requests
$ 100 to support the annual Poetry Jam
$ 1,500 for teachers' grade level expenditures
$ 800 for teachers' discretionary use (school supplies, etc)
$1,000 to support the Welcome Back to School Picnic
